Got to work this morning and was greeted with the task of driving this heap of shit around. I truly hate this truck. I am not awake enough for this.
Update: just dropped the key and it fell through a hole in the floor now I have to crawl under the truck and find it. Happy Monday to me!
At least we fixed the vacuum leak so it can actually idle now. And somehow the AC is working... It will probably die as soon as it hits 90 out as usual. But - worst transmission ever. Some vehicles really are better off with an automatic.
Now I’m going to go stall it about 7 times trying to back out of the long driveway I was dumb enough to leave it in on Friday. Hope the rest of Oppo is greeted with more interesting cars this morning!

I’ve recently driven a TD Euro version of one of these for ~450 miles and I thought the gearbox was alright. I’m thinking yours could probably do with some new gearstick bushes (alongside some other things by the looks of things!).

Yes, the stick is like rowing through syrup between gears and then it slams into gear. It needs help. It could also do with anything other than the 2.5L gas motor. There is no torque down low so you have to get on the gas to hook up the clutch which is a total crapshoot with no tachometer.

Yeah that doesn’t sound like fun.
Ours just had a dodgy engine mount so if you let it drop down to idle it vibrated the whole cabin and made you feel a little queezy. Other than that and a howling diff it was alright :)

To make it more entertaining drive using the shift pattern as indicated on the crooked upside down knob.

Sure! It’s already Russian roulette trying to find 3rd and Reverse with the correct pattern.

“...worst transmission ever.”
Nah. Just really abused. Replace the shift lever bushings and it will be like new. After 160,000 miles, the one in my truck was getting pretty sloppy. Ten dollars and 20 minutes later, it was like driving a new truck again.

If it was my own truck I would and if I get some free time I might just come in on the weekend and do it anyway. But my manager’s attitude is anything that doesn't prevent it from running isn't worth fixing. I'm damn close to buying a bench seat cover and slapping it on myself though.

Ah, the crappy, neglected work truck. I don’t miss it.
How does seat damage like that even happen? Wallet chains?

Ford quality? No wallet chains, but we do tend to have a lot of crap clipped to our belts. 2-way radios, cell phones in OtterBox cases and knives in leather holsters. We also have one guy that weighs around 350 and I’m sure that doesn’t help. He’s also around 6'5" and I’m not sure how he fits... I’m 6'2" and the driving position is awful got me.
I like to go treasure hunting between the vinyl and foam. So far I’ve found a box cutter, 1/4"-drive ratchet and a cell phone.

I had a coworker, whose (company) Silverado had a huge hollow in the driver seat. The guy was tall, so he didn’t look quite like the stereotypical “little old lady peering over the steering wheel”. I never looked closely enough at it to see if the padding was sunken or completely missing, but it was the most bucket-like bucket seat I’d ever seen.

How the hell isn’t that thing dead?

Actually, technically I think it is undead.
One of my managers bought this thing 10 years ago (making it 10 years old at that point) for $700 with a branded title after it had been CRASH TESTED. Somebody owned and abused this truck for 10 years then decided it was time for it to die. Somehow it wound up in the hands of a company that needed a 10 year old truck to crash for a Mythbusters-style science experiment. It was supposed to be crushed and scrapped after that. But my manager decided to rise it from the dead.
It then became zombie truck. It cannot be killed!

Wow, sounds like that thing has lived quite the life. I’m surprised it’s made it that long. Wonder when the last time the oil was changed?

Who knows. It doesn’t rack up enough miles to do it regularly. In the 8 years I’ve worked here we’ve collectively put about 1,500 miles on it. People only drive it out of despairation when the other 3 trucks (2010+ Ram HD’s) are all in use. Sometimes we use our own vehicles rather than signing this out. The log book is empty because no one wants to admit driving it. I *think* we get the oil changed when we get it inspected. It is current right now, but usually we wait until it’s expired and someone needs to take it on public roads before getting it done. One time I got it stuck in the mud and we didn’t even bother pulling it out for 3 days.
Oh and it only has 97k miles on it!

If you can drive a manual it is otherwise you’re SOL :)
